Technical Mythology

In our ever changing and technologically motivated world, artists are consistently challenged to adapt or risk falling behind. More and more artists are melding traditional skill and talent with the computer revolution and in turn changing the rules of their craft for those that follow. One of these artists is Michael Brooks, whose works are currently on view at Gallery 237 in Pineville.

Originally a photographer, Brooks has taken his knowledge of the human form, composition and eye-catching image and color and transferred it into his new passion for creating fantastical 3-D images similar to the fanciful works of Salvador Dali. His latest endeavor has required him to transfer his complex computer creations from the screen to canvas, using a process called giclee. The images in his pieces are so vibrant in color, and the illusion of depth is so convincing, that they seem almost to leap from the page.

There also seems to be a correlation between the creative mythology of Brooks' pieces and the mish-mash life he lives. He's a patchwork collection himself -- photographer, 3-D model creator, computer aficionado, artist -- and this translates beautifully into his works.

Brook's works are currently on display at Gallery 237, 237 Main Street in Pineville. Gallery hours are 11am-5pm Tuesday through Saturday and otherwise by appointment. For more information on this or upcoming exhibits, contact the Gallery.
